Every time you turn on the news, you are bombarded by politicians talking green. That's all they are doing, they are talking green.
If you are interested in a political party that acts Green then you are interested in the Green Party.
It should come as no surprise that in your neighborhood there are people who are dedicated to solving local problems, your problems, while thinking about the global consequences.
The History of Allerdale and Copeland Green Party
Geoff Smith had an interest in forming a party branch and invited Peter Cranie from Liverpool Green Party to an informal meeting of a few like-minded people back in 2004. The idea lay dormant for a while, and Jill Perry went off to China to teach English for 6 months.
Then we got going in earnest, and on the way to the very first meeting in Workington in September 2006, we were held up on the road by the lorry delivering one of the blades for a wind turbine being erected by Eastman chemicals – a good omen we all thought. The meeting was well-attended and it was agreed to form Allerdale Green Party branch.
We stood two candidates in the Borough Council elections in 2007, Jill Perry got 31% of the vote in Crummock Ward and Geoff Smith got nearly as many votes in Ellen but with five candidates standing the percentage was less impressive.
In January 2009 we changed our name to Allerdale and Copeland Green Party to reflect our changing boundaries at the General Election of 2010. And just a couple of months later Jill Perry was selected as general election candidate for Copeland.
That same year we stood five candidates in the County Council elections –We gained no seats but polled really well, even our paper candidates.
Dianne Standen in Cockermouth 19.8%
Geoff Smith in Dearham and Broughton 16.8%
Calum Grant in Keswick and Derwent 11.2%
Alistair Grey in Seaton 12.7%
And Nigel Gilligan in Seascale and Whicham 13.8%
Geoff Smith and Jill Perry were also selected to be on the list of candidates in the North West for the Euro-elections, with Peter Cranie as the lead candidate. It was a desperate disappointment that Peter missed out on a seat in the European Parliament to the BNP.
However the group, like the Party nationally, is stronger than it has ever been and it can’t be long until we have at least electoral victory.
